Bile rose in her throat at the sight of the Nar-Shreen guards who stood at attention on either side. She did her best to channel the remembered humiliation and anger into a glare of contemptuous disdain. Artemis, draped over her shoulder, stirred as he felt the tension in her muscles. "It'll work, Mina," he said. "Sailor V used to do this sort of thing all the time." The heavy double doors began to swing open for her. "I know," said Mina with a sigh. She glanced down at her unfamiliarly short arm and plump fingers. "I'd forgotten what it felt like. Disguise Power really does *change* you, but it makes everything seem like one of those dreams where you are somebody else, but still you, somehow." "Or like a play. You always wanted to be on stage." "I could have picked a better venue for my debut. I just hope the costume department's work hold out for the whole performance." Back at the Scouts' hiding place, they had let the recently-woken Rini be the final judge on how well Disguise Power had turned Mina into a passable duplicate of her. She'd studied Mina with a frowning face, circling around her several times before rattling off a list of complaints and improvements. "You do look a lot like her," Sailor Jupiter said, while helping Mina re-tie her pointed pink "meatballs." "Except for maybe being 3 or 4 years older." Mina laughed. "She didn't mention that. She probably thinks of herself as looking more grown-up than she is anyway." "Are you sure you'll be okay, Mina?" Jupiter said, suddenly serious. "Oh, I'll be..." She stopped. "I don't know, Sailor Jupiter. I don't know." "Mina -- Sailor Venus... You said yourself our greatest advantage was that we were together." "I'm not planning on sacrificing myself, if that's what you're worried about. I want to do anything I can to save Sailor Moon. But I want to save myself too!" She turned and called out: "Artemis! Are you ready?" "Right here," said the white cat. He was pushing something along the floor of the tunnel towards her. "We should take this, don't you think?" Mina bent and picked it up. "The vibra-blade," said Jupiter, on seeing it. "Mm-hm," was all Mina replied. "How did you get that?" Lita asked. "I was too busy being shot to death before and I haven't had a chance to ask. How did you manage to steal it?" When Mina didn't reply, Artemis spoke up: "We didn't steal it as such. We brought it from Earth. One of the Nar-Shreen you first fought dropped it when Sailor Moon's tiara took him out. It seemed simple and safe enough to use so we dragged it along when we came." "I don't know if I want to take it or not," said Mina. "Getting into a fight is the last thing we need at this point." "I'd feel better if you had it," said Jupiter. Mina had nodded and slipped it into one of the pocket-like folds of the gown the Luna Pen had given her. She could still feel the weight of the weapon as she walked into the chamber that was the setting for the Shreen auction. In truth she was angry with herself over her aversion to the blade. Was it supposed to be more noble and honorable to kill with a beam of light than to hack up an enemy with a knife? In battle you used whatever weapon was available, she told herself. Your opponent would show you no mercy, have no scruples. These were lessons she had learned long, long ago. Another lifetime ago. Until now, in this life, she had become too used to hiding from the responsibilities that were her burden and birthright. The lessons of war were painful things to remember. The spacious room she entered was like a great sphere squashed flat on the bottom. Several levels of platforms ringed its circumference, with a wide dais-like stage rising from the central floor. Many odd alien beings were strolling about the platforms, or sitting at tables and benches. The strangeness of so many different forms of life was numbing, yet she could not let her confusion and shock show. She must play her role with the cool disinterest. Much of the activity in the chamber seemed focused around a pit-like depression that was part of the lowest platform. In it crouched a bloated creature, like a giant diseased toad. Many aliens stood in nervous attendance around it, as if wanting to approach closer, but held back by sheer revulsion. The figure standing closest to the thing Mina recognized as Lord-Captain Arlen. She did not especially try to attract his attention, but it was only a few minutes before Arlen had spotted her and was making his way up the series of platforms in her direction. Attempting to avoid him would be futile, not to mention counter-productive, so, after exchanging a glance with Artemis, she folded her arms and stood watching the Shreen approach. "Majestic Lady Lapine," Arlen said with a bow, staying a step back so that his tall body did not loom over her petite one. "I am so pleased and honored that you choose to join us." "There were no other amusements available," Mina said, trying to match the bored tone Rini had used so well, "So I thought I might see what diversions were to be found here." "I hope you will not be disappointed, Majestic Lady. Indeed you might even take a fancy to some bauble or toy among our goods." Arlen's glance fell on Artemis who hung relaxed but watchful around Mina's shoulder. "An interesting animal," the Shreen said, bending closer. "His proximity alarms are rather sensitive," Mina said casually. "It might cause you some distress if you triggered his defense programs." Arlen straightened. "I see. Our presentations will be starting soon in any case, so I must bid you farewell for now, Majestic Lady. I just want to say again how delighted I am that you have come. I was worried for a time that you had chosen not to so honor us." "Mm," Mina said as if not really listening. "When I last inquired at your quarters, I was informed that you were not in residence and I was concerned you had left the station entirely." "I became dissatisfied with those accommodations." "You surely must have been.... Since you had all records of your ever being there removed as well." Mina tried not to miss a beat. "Discretion was one feature of that establishment I thought adequate." "Indeed. Very discreet. We questioned the proprietor quite vigorously on the matter and he still insisted he had never heard of you." "And are my comings and goings a matter you are so concerned with?" Arlen smiled. "Do forgive any impertinence on my part, Majestic Lady. It was just a curious matter. Now as I said, I must be on my way." Still smiling, he bowed and walked off down to the lower levels again. "We're not fooling anybody," Mina said in a sing-song whisper to Artemis once Arlen was gone. "If he's on to us," Artemis said in reply, "why doesn't he just grab us. Look around, they're out of the way, but there are Nar-Shreen guards all over the place." "You don't have to remind me. Why should he grab us now? He may suspect something, but he doesn't seem to know what. I think he's probably just playing along while he watches and tried to smoke us out." "This isn't good though, Mina." "No, but I didn't expect it to be easy. Artemis. You have to promise me this. If anything happens to me, you have to do everything you can to get out of here -- and get back to the others and tell them anything we've found out about Sailor Moon. Forget about me." "Mina --" "Forget about me. That *is* an order. Like I told Lita, I want to get out of this alive as much as anybody, but helping Serena is the top priority." The cat slumped down forlornly. "Ah... pardon me," came a musical voice from behind them. Mina turned and saw a humanoid alien sitting at a table near them. He looked very much like a man, though with orange pebbly skin -- that is until one moved closer and saw his "skin" was more like a series of rough plates and that his jointed limbs moved at non-human angles. "It is very forward of me, I know, Majestic Lady," he continued, "but would you care to join me? There is quite a good view from this table." She gave the alien a long stare and then nodded. She was here, after all, to get information. Sitting down across from him, Mina could smell a strong, but not unpleasant flowery scent from the alien. "I must admit," he said, "to having heard the Lord-Captain address you as the Majestic Lady Lapine." "That is correct," replied Mina. "And you would be?" The alien titled his head and make a clucking laugh. "A lesson that my vanity is excessive. I assumed you would recognize me. Heb'ssgenti Sobra Santaki. But no doubt a Lady of your status and refinement rarely has to bother herself with a common merchant such as myself, though it has been my good fortune to deal extensively with the Domerel Houses." "I see," Mina said cautiously. She was listening carefully to his tone of voice, and while it was risky making judgments on an alien's attitude, she decided to try. "Your obsequiousness is indeed well practiced..." The alien laughed again. "We all have our roles to play, don't we?" Mina nodded, leaning back in her chair. A posture of relaxed dignity was tricky when your feet didn't reach the floor. Languidly stroking Artemis helped her feel in character. "In fact," he continued. "Roles are part of the question most on my mind, Majestic Lady. I was surprised to see you here. If the Domerel are choosing to take a more active interest in commerce such as this... Well, it is a subject of interest for a professional middleman such as myself." "I... am here solely as an individual, Heb'ssgenti Sobra Santaki. The Shreen have made such a great noise about this 'auction' I came here to see it for myself, no more, no less." "Ah. That is good to hear. Curiosity is also my main interest, though I have a small discretionary fund for a trifle or two." He slid open a panel on top of their table and pulled out two palm-sized metal tablets. He politely handed one to her. It had several rows of contact keys and a flat display screen that showed in glowing text and a small animation how the panel was to be used for entering bids. "There is some special attraction is there not?" Mina ventured. "Some sort of captured... princess? To be auctioned into slavery?" "Mm? Is that what is to be? I have not been informed myself. In fact all the rumors I have heard indicate that this, 'special attraction' as you say, is intended as a treat for the Fahram'hr Kinglet and that we are little more than stage trappings." To whom he was referring wasn't clear to Mina, but she felt it would be too suspicious if she inquired. There was that ugly mass of flesh in the pit Arlen had been fussing over. Could that thing be some sort of King? He nodded towards the central stage, where several large blocky containers were being wheeled out and unfolded into display stands. "It seems the show is soon to begin." The Shreen Lord-Captain himself came on stage next, beginning a patter of deference to his guests and boasts about what goods were being made available. "As is our fashion, we start with a few baubles... these Jharian jewel spikes for instance... or this Soul-Icon from the Sansord Cloisters. A mere taste for the discriminating collector, before we move on the more intriguing items..." "Quite a showman for a puffed-up Brigand, eh?" said the alien. "The strength of the Shreen does not impress you?" "Oh, they know a few tricks and can mange their bloody business well enough. But my folk have seen their sort come and go many times. It is a race such as Fahram'hr that pose a true threat. No doubt why the Shreen are attempting to coddle them with toys." Mina watched the alien carefully as he spoke, and this time he did clearly nod to the blue-green creature. It seemed hardly to be noticing what was taking place, let alone punching at the keys on the bidding tablet, as others around the chamber were starting to do. Her companion was also becoming increasingly interested, despite his pose of indifference. She wished she could risk talking with Artemis, but the two partners had to be content with another exchanged glance and a shrug, and they both turned back to patiently observe, alert for any useful information. * * * "I always hate guard duty," said Sailor Jupiter. She stood by the opening to the Scouts' cave, staring out at the darkness beyond. Amy sat a little ways in, playing a "Tetris" game with Rini that she'd programmed on her computer. "The Queen always says it's good for me," Jupiter continued. "To just watch, patient, aware, action without acting...." Amy looked up, puzzled at her friend's words and soft tone of voice. "Lita...?" Jupiter blinked suddenly and shook her head. "Did... I say that? It was almost like I was dreaming for a moment. Or... It's like, in this insane place, I sometimes feel closer to our... other life, on the Moon, that I do to being a schoolgirl back on Earth. Maybe I'm still just half-crazy." "No, Jupiter," said Amy. "I think I know what you mean. It's like I can almost remember, like a dream you just forgot a second ago." "Wow... that's pretty poetic for you, Amy." She frowned at the jibe. "There's more poetry in science that you'd think, Jupiter. That was something the Moon Kingdom understood...." "Hey!" said Rini, not looking up from her game. "If you two are going to argue, take it outside -- I'm trying to concentrate here." "Sorry," said Jupiter with a laugh. She turned to look back outside again -- and saw a shadow that had not been there before. She tensed, but said nothing, alert, but not wanting alarm Amy and Rini unduly. A figure was picking its way through the rubble outside the tunnel. A human figure, in a dark uniform. Long hair. Female and -- Amy and Rini looked up in alarm at Lita's sudden gasp. She was stepping back from the tunnel entrance, as someone else appeared in the jagged gap. "Raye!" shouted Jupiter, finally believing her eyes. She lunged forward, caught Raye in a bear-hug, and began spinning her around, laughing. "Will you put me down!" Raye managed to say, trying to wriggle free. Lita put set her on the floor, but only reluctantly let go of her. "Oh, Raye," she said tearily. "It's so good to see you! We... we didn't even know if you were still alive." "I am. I am...." Amy and Rini had run over by this time. "We were so worried," said Amy. "It *is* good to see you guys," she said with a smile that trembled just a bit. "And you, Rini.... RINI!?" The little girl met Raye's astonished gaze with her own stare. "Well, *somebody* had to come look after you dummies, after all the trouble you got yourself into!" Raye looked up to Jupiter and then Amy. "I... I guess we better get each other up-to-date." "You bet!" said Jupiter. "How did you find us? Where have you been? And what is that you're wearing?" "It almost looks like..." began Amy, "a Shreen -- " she stopped herself. "A Shreen uniform. Yeah." Raye finished coldly. Jupiter frowned in puzzlement. "What are you guys --" "Hey!" interrupted Rini. She peered around Raye's legs and pointed out of the cave. "Who's that big lady out there?" "What?" said Lita, spinning to look. "You better come up, Gel," said Raye, without turning. It wasn't easy for Gel to squeeze her muscular body through the opening into the tunnels, and she had to stand bent a bit once inside. Amy and Sailor Jupiter only looked at her, unable to decide on appropriate emotions or reactions. "This is Gel," said Raye. "Lieutenant Gel of the Shreen." "My god," Lita said at last. "What..." "You are Sailor Jupiter," Gel said. "And you, Sailor Mercury. I was not at the battle at the Hellstrike myself, but I have studied the tapes. You are both formidable warriors." "You are supposed to be impressed that she admits that," said Raye icily. "Just as you two were sold, Gel here bought me -- but she's helping us now." "I'm not thrilled with the offers of help we tend to get here," said Jupiter, looking hard at Gel. "That I am here, with Raye," Gel said, "rather than Lord-Captain Arlen and a squad of Nar-Shreen, should say much about my intentions, Sailor Jupiter." "Let's..." said Amy. "Let's all sit down and give everybody a chance to talk." "Talk talk talk," said Rini crossly, sitting down and folding her arms in an exasperated pose. "You big kids are always talking -- when we still have to find dumb old Serena!" "Guys..." Raye said slowly. "How did Rini get here? And -- Luna!" Luna walked up from the shadows of the tunnel. "Hello Raye," she said, a little solemnly. "I knew you'd be all right...." As she spoke her eyes never left Gel, who looked back with a raised eyebrow at the black cat They all sat down around the heater, the Scouts in a circle with Rini, Luna sitting on Amy's lap. Gel sat back against the tunnel wall, behind Raye. Luna, Amy, and Lita all contributed to the story of recent events. There were a few awkward moments at first after a cough and nod from Luna reminded the others that Rini was listening intently as well. Raye, though, made it clear that she could understand from a few hints what was not openly explained in the accounts. But Raye herself only gave the briefest summary of her own experiences, saying little past that she had been sold to Gel, but have convinced the Shreen to help her locate the others, after Dr. Halent had revealed they were still alive. Amy and Luna listened without comment, but Jupiter frowned at Raye, giving her uniform a long look. "What do you mean 'convinced', Raye? What does *she* want from you in return?" "Is she...." Amy asked, carefully choosing her words, "making you do... anything? Tell us, and we'll help you." Jupiter turned to Amy, nodded vigorously, then looked back at Raye. "We can take care of her, just say the word." Raye made a humorless laugh. "That's not necessary." "It is... hard to trust these aliens," said Luna. Gel's face was still and expressionless, only her eyes moving to meet the glares the others turned on her. "You can trust me," Raye said, cryptically. "And I say Gel is helping us. That's all there is to say." "No it *isn't*," Jupiter said, her voice rising. "You can't just show up from nowhere, with one of these Shreen bastards trailing after you without explaining more. What --" Raye stood abruptly, and interrupted Jupiter by announcing: "There's a lot we have to do, but I know what I need to take care of first." She touched the neckline of her shirt and ran her finger down its front. The cloth parted, and she began to pull off her shirt. "Raye, what... " said Lita, staring in surprise. "I'm going to try your trick of transforming back and then becoming Sailor Mars again to get rid of the bio-siphon." She continued stripping down until she stood naked. "There's no telling what will happen to these clothes with all the changing." She tossed the uniform into a heap at Gel's feet. Amy, still blushing a little, said: "Raye, this is dangerous, remember Lita's siphon was inactive." "Mine's at the lowest power level," she glanced at Gel, who nodded. "I have to try." Without waiting for further arguments, Raye closed her eyes and her nude body was wrapped in flame and red ribbon. The glow faded and Raye was in her her school uniform. Her face went pale and she collapsed to her knees, clutching her chest and making a gasping sound, as if there were suddenly no oxygen in the air. "Raye!" said Gel in alarm, starting to rush to her -- only to be checked by Lita's strong arm. "What can *you* do for her?" snarled Sailor Jupiter. She turned from the Shreen and knelt by Raye herself. "Raye," she said sternly. "You can do it. Just get a hold of yourself. Change back. Change back!" Raye looked up into Jupiter's gaze. Her eyes were wide with confusion and helplessness. She made a trembling shake of her head. "Raye!" Jupiter said again, keeping her own eyes locked on Raye's. She took Raye's hands in her own and grasped them tightly. A faint emerald aura shimmered into existence around her fingers, and began to flow along Raye's arms and about her body. Raye managed to draw a breath. She smiled at Jupiter and slipped one of her hands free. She reached into the pocket of her blouse and pulled out her transformation pen. Lita nodded at her, released Raye's other hand, and moved back. Again, Ray breathed deeply. "... mars... star... power... " A wave of heat, as if from a suddenly opened furnace door, rushed through the dank tunnel, momentarily warming it. The brilliance of fire in the darkness caused the others to look away, but when they turned back, Sailor Mars stood before them. "So... beautiful..." said Gel softly. Before any of the other could respond, they were distracted by Mars's hiss of pain. She grimaced and hugged herself tightly. "Sailor Mars!" said Amy. "Let me --" "N-no!" said Mars. "You s-said... I just have to ride it... ah! out...." Her face still contorted, Mars reached her hand under her collar to her back. She felt around, and in a moment, was pulling out a mesh of wires. She looked at the thing for a second, threw it down hard to the grown, and then sighed deeply. This time Jupiter was not in the way of Gel as she hurried over and put her hands on Mars's shoulders. "Are you all right, Raye... I've never... seen anything like that before. You amaze me more --" "Save it," Raye said cutting her off. "Amy? What are you doing?" The slight girl had stood and was unfastening her red robe. "I don't particularly care what happens to this," she said as it fell to the floor. "But it might be best not to introduce more variables." "No, Amy!" said Jupiter. "You can't try it. You're siphon thing is still at full power. Raye had it bad enough...." Amy smiled and held out her hands, one toward Jupiter and one towards Mars. "But you helped her. And I have *two* strong friends who can help me now." "Three!" piped up Rini, running over to grab Jupiter and Mars's other hands. "I stand corrected," Amy said with a laugh. TO BE CONCLUDED
