Many of the creatures dragged on stage and auctioned off by Arlen were hard for Mina to think of as intelligent individuals -- until she saw their eyes and recognized what seemed universal expressions of fear and broken despair. Her companion, who had bid enthusiastically and even purchased a few of the stolen relics and plundered art-works, had lost all interest when the shift to living products had been made. "Like your Majestic self," he explained in answer to her query, "I am here as an individual. We Monresians deal in chattel when there is a demand, but of course we have no need for slaves ourselves -- since our lower castes can be bred as needed. But... you are not participating? The Domerel Houses so often purchase slaves from the Shreen." Mina opened her mouth to protest -- but what exactly was she defending and to whom? Improvising around her role, she simply said: "I already purchased an amusing specimen from the Lord-Captain, shortly after I arrived." "Ah yes," said the alien. "The one he was to execute. I was there when your Scarembli servant purchased her. A prize for you, but a disappointment to we, the audience. The replacements did not live up to the billing your slave had been given." Mina felt a little sick at the reminder that others had died in her place that day, but this was no time for such morbid reflections, for the Lord-Captain's voice was calling out: "And my noble guests and customers, no longer shall we delay." As he spoke, a tall, cone-shaped object was being rolled on to the stage behind him, pushed by two nar-Shreen in full combat gear. "Occasionally a most interesting and unique item comes into out hands from our explorations and research ventures. What we have to offer you this day is not simply an unusual slave, not just a fascinating paranormal life-form, not just a warrior who managed to stand, for a time, against a Shreen assault on her homeworld...." Pin-pricks of pain stung Mina's flesh as Artemis's claws extended in alarm. She was grateful for the focusing sensations, and put her hand on Artemis's back to steady him -- and herself. "...but a warrior-princess," Arlen was continuing. "Noble, beautiful, powerful -- defeated, brought low before you today." The sides of the container fell away and folded to the floor. "The Princess Serenity!" Arlen called out. Mina felt as if she were in one of those dreams that crash into nightmare when something impossible and horrific suddenly occurs. Only here there was no sudden and merciful awakening. Immaculate white gown around her slim, delicate form. Ribbons of golden hair sweeping from her lowered head. Her beauty was marred only by the bands of circuitry manacled around her neck and wrists. "No... no... no..." Mina whispered to Artemis, as quietly as she could. "It can't be. How could they...?" "Just the sight of her surely shows how extraordinary an item she is," Arlen said. He gestured for her to step forward. When she remained motionless, one of the nar-Shreen gave her a rough shove. Her eyes went wide as she stumbled, caught her bare foot in the hem of her gown and, arms flailing, fell flat on her face to the stage floor. Mina and Artemis sighed in unison. That settled that. You could dress Serena up in fancy clothes, but that was a long way from making her a Princess. Various laughs and titters filled the doomed chamber as, at the Lord-Captain's command, a nar-Shreen picked Serena up and deposited her on her feet next to Arlen. "Her... Her paranormal abilities," he continued, a little uncertain at first, but then getting his rhythm back, "match her beauty. Shreen technology controls them, but her owner may amuse himself with having such a powerful creature helpless at his command." Arlen grabbed Serena's chin and forced her to look up at the crowd. Mina knew this moment would come -- and she had no idea what would happen. Would Serena spot her in the crowd? Was it possible she'd see her and think she was Rini? Arlen was showing her off to the entire assemblage. Serena's eyes -- which were moist but not openly weeping, moved past where Mina sat. There was a flash of eye-contact between them.... Yet Serena showed no reaction and... even stranger, the sensation of contact lingered as if Mina was still gazing into somebody's eyes. Her vision swam and shooting pains seemed to crack her skull: it was like having an entire migraine episode playing at fast-forward her head. Artemis whispered in her ear: "Mina! What's wrong...." "...headache... but getting better..." she said as the pain started to lift. "Majestic Lady?" said the alien across the table from her, apparently overhearing. "A... a small headache... All this noise and childish bargaining..." "Shall I summon some assistance?" "No... I... wouldn't trust the barbaric care of the Shreen if my head was actually splitting open." The alien chuckled. "I understand. Hmm. Arlen's star attraction seems to be making a disappointing impression." Mina looked up, though her eyes were still wavy and hard to focus. The pain was almost gone, though the odd sense of....presence still lingered. She almost wished that the attack would return so she did not have to see what was happening on the stage. "And our honored humanoid guests," Arlen said, "no doubt can appreciate her potential in your breeding pens..." His hand clutched the fabric of Serena's gown at the bosom and tore the dress open with one rip. Serena stifled a shriek, but blushed a bright red on her face and exposed chest She tried to clutch the remaining tatters of fabric over herself, but Arlen plucked them from her trembling fingers until she was entirely naked. With one hand he grabbed her arms and pulled them behind her back, so that her breasts were thrust forward. "Young, but so well developed," he said, spinning her around in display again. "Further, " he continued with a smirk. "For the connoisseur..." Arlen swept his free hand down and up, catching Serena on the buttocks and lifting her up off the ground. He casually presented her spread thighs to the crowd. "...quite untouched," he finished. Serena, stunned at first, slammed her knees together, and began to thrash in Arlen's grasp. He let her slide down to the floor, where she lay, tears no longer withheld. "Lord-Captain," called a voice from one of the levels near the stage. Something scaly and frilled reclined on a bench there. "It is an attractive enough mammal, if one has a taste for such things. But surely you exaggerate her worth." Arlen replied to the crowd, which murmured in agreement. "The Spyran ambassador thinks the Shreen are attempting to deceive our respected customers.... What sort of reputation would be making for ourselves if we did such a thing?" "Hah! You would be..." the reptilian alien started to respond, but fell silent. Indeed, the entire chamber had become quieter than it had been throughout the proceedings. The only sound was a heavy sliding, a base grunt, and voice the croaked: "Words, like so many you say... empty. But we are curious...." The great troll-like creature was lifting its bulk from its pit. Ignoring all those who fled from its path, it slowly shambled up to the stage, letting its diseased arm drag by its side, its flat black eyes staring directly at the trembling Serena. * * * Sailor Mercury entered a "save" command, and then looked up from her computer screen. She turned her head from side to side, stretching the muscles in her neck, and then let herself sigh a little. The sensation of her life draining away, like water down a drain, had almost been worse than any of the physical pain Dr. Halent had inflicted on her -- but it had only lasted a moment before energy from her friends had begun to fill her, as if it was the warmth of life itself. Now, though Amy knew it was only contrast, she felt stronger than she had since first awakening as Sailor Mercury. But as usual, it wasn't her powers or fighting ability she calling on for her current task. A part of her super-ego was still telling her that what she was doing was selfish, but she also still heard Mina's words, and Amy knew that even if selfishness was a factor, what she was planning was still... necessary. She looked around their less-than-comfortable hiding place. Luna was napping by the heater, while Jupiter and Rini were eating a meal from their meager food supply. Mercury stood and walked over. "Lita," she said, "where are Raye and... Lieutenant Gel?" Jupiter's face grew dark. She nodded towards one of the side tunnels. "Back there, somewhere." "Oh... Thank you." Sailor Mercury started to turn and walk away, but Jupiter caught her arm and held her back. "Mercury," Jupiter said, "what... what is wrong with Raye? I don't get it." Mercury shook her head. "I don't know, Lita. I'd have to guess that... something terrible happened to her -- just like the rest of us. I... I couldn't tell you or Mina about Dr. Halent at first either." "But you had a plan you were trying to cook up, which I know I spoiled." Amy smiled and touched Lita's shoulder. "That's all right Jupiter. But it wasn't just that. It was all so big, so much to try and tell and... I was a little ashamed.... Raye may have to work through it in her own way, in her own time." "But we should help her." "We can and we will, when she's ready." "Mm. I understand that.... But what I can't see is the deal with her and that alien." Amy just shook her head, patted Lita's arm, and walked off down the passage. * * * "...oh... oh..." Gel murmured, as she cradled Sailor Mars in her arms. Raye's face was buried within the curves of Gel's breasts. She nuzzled and rubbed her cheeks over the soft alien skin, before moving on to lick circles around the large, blood-red aureola. Raye looked up at the eyes that gazed down at her. She opened her mouth and began to hungerly suck and bite at a jutting nipple. Gel shuddered and hugged her tighter. Mars gave her a sharp nip and then moved back. "Like that?" she said, licking her lips. "If..." Gel started to say, but almost seemed to drift asleep before continuing, "If I could only stay here, holding you, forever...." Sailor Mars leaned back against Gel's shoulder, staring at the tunnel ceiling, barely discernible in the faint light. "What of all your plans, Gel, the new empire you wanted to build?" she asked in a languid, detached tone. "That... all seems so far away, Raye. Another world. So much seems distant... ever since I met your friends and saw you... with them." "Mm...?" "You and your comrades are so... close, you care for each other so much. I see that with just a few words and gestures. I... my comrades I have fought with, even my own cadets... They are loyal, they obey me -- fight and even risk their lives at my word. But they... If I were lost on the battle field, captured by enemies, they would never... consider throwing away their lives, their careers to rescue me. They would forget me and move on. But you warriors, so frail, so young, yet so strong... So much there for each other." "I told you Gel," Mars said, a little sharply, "I told you a long time a go, that we... that the Sailor Scouts fight for more than things you can see and grab and desire." "Love and Justice. I remember. And your Princess." "Yes." "I..." Gel smiled. "I am jealous, Raye. Of what you have with your comrades." "Don't worry Gel," Raye say, turning in Gel's arms to snuggle against her. "What I feel for you is not like anything I feel for the other Scouts." "Thank you, Raye," she said, kissing her forehead. "To not have you... to not have all of you, for me... That thought chills me more than any battle, and enemy I have ever faced...." * * * It was dark in the small side tunnel and Mercury heard low voices before her eyes adjusted enough to see anything. What she did see was the large shape of the alien woman, sitting, with the smaller form of Sailor Mars leaning back against her, head on Gel's breast, while the Shreen gently stroked Raye's hair. It was a sight Amy's brain just couldn't process; it was a puzzle she couldn't begin to solve -- yet her eyes could not deny what they were seeing. Mercury made a quiet cough. In the dimness she saw Mars stir, pushing herself up from Gel's chest. "Amy," she said simply. "Should... should I come back later?" Mercury asked, and then immediately regretted phrasing it like that. "No. What is it?" "Actually... I really need to speak with Lieutenant Gel." The dark outline of the Shreen turned towards her. "Yes, Sailor Mercury?" "Lieutenant... Ah... Maybe... maybe we should talk alone...." Raye looked at Gel and then back at Amy. "Anything you have to say to her you can say to me, Mercury," Mars said. Gel slowly nodded. She took a small object from her vest pocket and squeezed it. It flashed into a glowing cube, which Gel placed on the floor in front of her. She and Amy looked at each other for a silent minute. "Very well," said Mercury finally, "Lieutenant. I remember you. You were the one who examined me, tested me... and then sold me to... to Dr. Halent." "Yes, Sailor Mercury." "I just wanted to ask... Did you... know... what he was going to do to me?" Mars, without turning towards Gel, reached and grasped Gel's forearm above the wrist. She held it tightly. "Yes," Gel said. "It is standard procedure for him. He rarely has sentient beings to examine though." "And that didn't matter to you," Mercury asked, "that I was a thinking, feeling person?" Mars was squeezing the arm harder, the ruddy skin turning pink beneath Raye's fingers. "Don't expect her to express remorse," Mars said. "The Shreen don't come equip with that. The only things they see in the Universe are Hate and Fear." Gel looked down at Raye. "I... I am learning knew things though. The Universe is more than I had ever believed. But... I cannot lie about what I thought then." She turned back to Amy. "You were a slave to be deposed of, Sailor Mercury. I knew Halent would be grateful to me for you. I gave it no more thought." ""Amy," said Mars, "do you want to punish Gel for putting you through that?" Mercury shook her head once. "I just needed to know. You said Dr. Halent is now in your personal computer system?" "Yes," said Gel. "He needed processing and data space to regenerate himself." "But he needs greater capacity than you have available to complete the process?" "That's correct." "Then... can you give me access to your system?" Gel frowned, then grimaced. Amy tried to keep her eyes away from the trails of blood running down Gel's hand, from where Mars's fingers were contusing her skin. "It..." began Gel, "would be difficult... to be get you past security. That's entirely under Arlen's control." "But I can come and go," said Mars. "Can I do anything for you, Mercury?" Sailor Mercury thought a moment, and then held up her compact-computer. "Yes, Raye, yes you can. The commands are very simple, I --" Sailor Mercury! Sailor Mars!" came the distressed voice of Luna as she bound up the tunnel. "Come quickly!" "What is it Luna?" asked Mercury. "It's Rini! It's... happening again!" When they all hurried back to the main chamber, they found Rini laying back across Jupiter's lap as if unconscious. Above the child's body hovered the glowing, rotating image of the Silver Crystal. "She just fell over!" said Jupiter. "She was all right and...." "This is incredible," said Mars. "Amy, what does this mean?" Sailor Mercury clicked on her scanning visor -- and then shook her head helplessly. "There are forces here, energies I've never seen before...." "...mommy..?" Rini was beginning to stir a little. "Your mommy's not here," said Jupiter. Rini sat up abruptly. "Mommy..." she repeated. "Pumpkin," said Lita. "I'm afraid your mommy --" Rini did not appear to be listening. She just stared into the Crystal. "Yes..." she said. "Yes, mommy, I can see Mina...." "Mina?!" said Mars. "Where is she?" "She's..." Rini said, in a far-away voice. "She's with a funny orange man.... They are looking... at a big ugly monster. And Serena is there...." "Serena!" Jupiter, Mars, and Mercury said almost in unison. "Rini," Mercury said, "Please tell us more, we have to know more." "Yeep!" exclaimed Jupiter as the Luna Ball flew past her head. It stopped, hovered above the Crystal, and began to spin, its cat-eyes glowing. It spun faster and faster and faster, until it seemed little more than a blurry sphere of light. It began to lower, and as soon as it made contact with the Crystal, it faded into a translucent globe. And within the globe, an image started to form.... * * * Mina felt dizzy with disgust, but she could not look away. Even if she wanted to, the returned pain in her head was like a vice, holding her skull in place. "This thing you speak of," rumbled the voice of the troll, "it makes us curious. You claim much. It seems little. Yet, we feel its aura." "Your highness," said Arlen. "I make no groundless boasts about this slave. Feel free to verify all that I have said." "We will." The creature moved closer to Serena, who struggled, but has held tight by Arlen's hands on her shoulders. She was biting her lip to keep from wailing as the troll slowly lifted its fungus covered hand to her face. Serena turned, desperately trying to avoid contact with the diseased alien flesh. In horror, Mina noticed that the pustules of mold on the thing's hand were... swelling, fattening like puffballs. She couldn't help crying out in shock when the swellings burst, releasing a thick grey cloud of particles around Serena's head. Mina had not been the only member of the audience to exclaim at the sight. The cloud quickly settled, leaving Serena's face and bare chest coated with a layer of grey dust -- that rapidly thickened into a hideous slime. Arlen released her, but Serena stood, wobbling only a little. "Interesting..." came a gravelly voice -- a grating rasp that came, impossibly, from Serena's throat. Mina bit her fingers hard to keep from screaming. This was horrible, too horrible -- blasphemous. She felt Artemis shifting nervously on her shoulder, but couldn't bare to look at his face. This nightmare was happening before her... and she could think of nothing -- nothing! -- that she could do to stop it! "Possession," Mina's alien companion said, his own voice strained. "Fahram'hr microbial possession. I have no prejudice against intelligent fungal life-forms... But I fear that someday we shall all be only hosts for the Fahram'hr, that they are in truth the ultimate, inevitable mode of life...." "The mind is... confused," the awful voice from Serena said. She fingered a swath of mold away from her eyes as if to see better. "Yet, the form is... unusual." "She" raised her arms to look at the shackles on her wrists. "These... inhibit her paranormal abilities." "Yes, you highness," Arlen said. "Allow me...." He touched the bands lightly and they fell to the floor. "Ah..." said "Serena". "This is curious...." She held out her hand. A ball of light gathered on her palm and, with a flash of gold, solidified as Sailor Moon's transformation brooch. "I did promise you an interesting specimen," said Arlen. "Somatic variant transmogrification through conceptual n-spatial rotation. Activated through mnemonic trigger phrase and catalytic material interface." She slid open the lid of the brooch. No, thought Mina. No. No. No. No. No. Coldly, the distorted voice spoke: "Moon... Crystal... Power..." Gasps and startled cries filled the spherical chamber as the dais danced with lights. When it all faded, there stood Sailor Moon. Seeing her in uniform, the colors vivid enough to seem to glow, would have thrilled Mina -- if Serena's face was not still fouled with smears of fungus. "She fights..." came the voice, a little closer to normal now, but still sickening to hear. "She fights our touch.... But she is not strong enough. There are... levels here.... Potentials..." She held out her hand and, with a lightning light crack that Mina had never seen before, the Moon Scepter appeared in her hand. She began to raise it in a characteristic motion. "Your Majesty!" Arlen said quickly. "Please remember we have other guests present -- whose safety I am bound to protect." Sailor Moon grunted, and lowered the weapon. "Very well Shreen, you have interested us sufficiently." The Scepter vanished. "So you wish to place a bid for this slave?" "Bid. This bidding of your. Useless. Tell you price and we shall exchange as necessary." "Ah... yes, your Majesty -- though I must offer the others here a chance to make a competing offer." Arlen gazed out over the still stunned crowd. It did not take many minutes of silence for him to conclude that there would be no further offers. "Very well, your Majesty. I shall have my merchant-master put together a suitable exchange and handle the details." "That is well. Enough time has been wasted. The Sporocyst Matrix must digest this creature and its secrets." She started to turn away, but Arlen spoke up: "Ah... your Majesty, it is... part of these tradings, that we must retain possession of the item until the final exchange has been made." "More waste of time, "Sailor Moon said, "but to dispute would be...." "... greater waste." The final words had groaned out from the mouth of the troll. Sailor Moon started to stumbled back. The growths on her face began to darken... and rapidly flake off. Soon her skin was bare again. Sailor Moon herself fell to her knees, her face white, overwhelmed with terror. Arlen quickly replaced the bands on her wrists, and handed her unresisting form over to the nar-Shreen guards to carry off. "That was not at all pleasant," said Mina's companion, rising. Mina blinked, and looked around, feeling amazed that she was not forever frozen in a position of nauseous fear. "I look forward to meeting you again, Majestic Lady," said the alien. "I have not dealt with the House Lapine before... I hope you will consider granting me your patronage in-the future." Mina nodded dumbly and let the somewhat nonplussed alien walk off. Most of the guests seemed to be making for the exits as quickly as possible. "Mina?" Artemis whispered. "Mina. We need to get back to the others -- as quickly as possible. We need to plan." "I... I know... Oh my god, Artemis, oh my god..." She managed to get to her feet and walk, unsteadily, along with the last departing guests. Her headache had once again faded, but her thoughts still seemed trapped in tar. "MEEOOORRRWWW!!!" a screech from Artemis broke her funk and Mina was suddenly aware again. The cat had been snatched off her shoulder and was now in the hand of a nar-Shreen who had stepped up from behind a support pillar. It held Artemis high and at arm's length, tense and expectant. "Ah," came a familiar voice. Lord-Captain Arlen stepped up from her other side. "Majestic Lady, you have disappointed this soldier. I had promised him a suicide mission -- but it appears you exaggerated your bio-defense system's capabilities." Mina glared up at Arlen, but looked back at Artemis as he yowled in pain again. "Oh, kill the thing already," Arlen said in irritation. The nar-Shreen's thick fingers began to close. Mina could see in her mind clearly the necessary moves to pull out the vibra-knife, activate it in mid-spin, and strike at the creature crushing her friend. She had already started the motion as she released her petite Rini-body would not be able to reach the nar-Shreen at all, let alone strike at the proper target. There was no choice to be made. Disguise Power fell from her in shards as she spun and lashed out with the shrieking weapon. The nar-Shreen's wrist was neatly severed and both hand and Artemis tumbled through the air. The cat was rolling in reflex to ready its paws as his eyes met with Mina's. Again there was no arguments. Orders had been given. Artemis hit the ground feet first and immediately ran off with all his feline speed. The maimed nar-Shreen seemed more concerned about the escaping cat than it spurting wrist. Arlen idly waved him off. He was far more interested in Mina, who now stood, fully back to normal, in her white jumpsuit. "Excellent," Arlen said, grinning broadly. Mina lunged at him, ramming the vibra-blade into his chest. The weapon sunk in an inch and then made a stuttering chugging noise. Through the tear in Arlen's coat, a clump of black tendrils poured out to encase the knife -- and Mina's hand. Thrown off-balance, Mina stumbled forward to meet Arlen's knee as he brought it up hard into her stomach. Her fingers were released and she fell back, gracelessly, to the floor, trying to catch her breath. "Excellent," Arlen repeated. "I am... delighted. The story of exactly what you have done to the no-doubt late Lady Lapine, and how and why you have taken her place is going to be most entertaining!" Able to breath again, Mina started to move, but Arlen was too quick. He Grabbed her shoulder and hefted her up into the air. He seemed as strong as a nar-Shreen and much faster. His other fist smashed into her stomach again and then back-handed her across the face. "And I am certain your resistance to tell that story will also give Kaghstee an excuse for his own choice of entertainment. He's missed you quite a lot I'm afraid." Head spinning, jaw throbbing, mouth bloody, Mina knew any sort of defiant or witty reply was well beyond her at this point. She could only watch as Arlen raised his fist again, drew it back, and began another swing at her face. * * * Rini crumpled as if she had been the one hit. The Crystal vanished. The Luna Ball spun back to normal and fell to the floor to lay motionless. "My God!" said Jupiter. "We've got to do something!" "Artemis will be heading to our emergency rendezvous point!" said Luna. "I'll go find him!" "Luna," said Sailor Mercury. "Are you... I mean..." "I have to, Amy. I'm the fastest and I can hide and get away best." "Okay... Please be careful!" Luna nodded and was gone in flash of black. "But what about Mina," said Jupiter, growing more frantic. "And... Sailor Moon! I can barely stand to think about --" "Then don't," said Amy. "We have to keep our wits together. Luna was right about getting Artemis. We need to hear more from him. We have to find out more about what's going on, what Arlen is going to do with Serena." "She knows," said Mars, speaking up for the first time since the Crystal had appeared. "Gel knows what's going on." Jupiter handed the sleeping Rini to Amy, stood, and approached Gel. "Tell us, you bitch. Tell us everything!" she shouted. Gel met her rage calmly. "I suspected something like this.... It is Arlen's favorite trick. He's inhibiting your Sailor Moon's power -- maybe with a bio-siphon, maybe something else. Once she has been sold to the Fahram'hr he'll remotely restore her abilities -- which Raye tells me can be greater the rest of yours combined. She'll be a living time bomb to destroy the Kinglet." Sailor Jupiter grew even angrier. She clutched her fists in front of her, then turned away to punch one of the tunnels walls -- leaving a noticeable dent in the metal. "What can we do!" she hissed. "What can we do to stop this!" "Lita," Mercury said in a measured voice. "Think of your own training. What is the first thing you try on an apparently physically superior foe?" Jupiter turned, frowning at first, but then her face relaxed a little as she thought. "You... You try to use your opponent's own strength against him." "Exactly," said Mercury, walking up to stand between Jupiter and Gel. "If Arlen likes this trick so well -- we use it to trick him in return." She looked up at Mars, who was standing behind Gel. "Sailor Mars... We'll need her help." "Of course, said Mars. Gel looked back at her. Mars let Gel take her gloved hand, and the Shreen pressed it to her cheek. "Tell me what you want me to do," Gel said, her eyes looking only at Raye. TO BE CONTINUED -- Samuel Lewis Crider allosaur@mcs.net
